About the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Logo

The TRC logo is a flame that incorporates elements of the three distinct Aboriginal groups in Canada. First Nations are symbolically represented by the feather, Métis people are symbolically represented by the infinity symbol, and Inuit people are symbolically represented by the traditional seal oil lantern (qulliq) that the flame rests upon.
A flame was chosen as an appropriate symbol to represent the Commission. In every culture stories are told around a flame, a campfire, a candle. The flame illuminates the darkness and has transformative properties.
This could be interpreted as one of the most important aspects of the TRC, to shed light on a past that has been hidden away in the darkness for far too long.
It is our hope that the TRC will be a transformative instrument in healing, reconciliation and recording history, while also assisting to renew and rebuild the relationship between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples.
The TRC logo was designed by Kirk Brant, an Aboriginal artist, graphic designer, and member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Ontario.
